The Lautoka Bowling Club, a beloved fixture in the community for over fifty years, faces an uncertain future as it prepares to close down between late March and early April. The decision follows the sale of the land by the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC), leaving members grappling with the emotional repercussions of losing a space that has facilitated countless friendships and memories through the sport of bowling.

Longstanding member David Bennion reflected on the profound impact the club has had on its members. “This place has been a big part of our lives. It’s not just about bowling; it’s about people, friendships, and staying active,” he shared. Established in the 1950s during the Colonial Sugar Refinery era, the Lautoka Bowling Club initially catered to expatriates. However, it became a more inclusive venue in the late 1960s and early 1970s, opening its doors to local players and solidifying its role as a vibrant community hub.

Bennion, who began bowling in the late 1980s upon encouragement from the FSC general manager, shared fond memories of the club, including the highlights of competing alongside his wife. Their journey in bowling not only kept them active but also played a crucial role in their personal growth and social lives. “It keeps you moving, and it keeps you young,” he noted.

Members of the Lautoka Bowling Club are now exploring alternative options to keep the sport alive within the community. One proposal considers establishing a new bowling green at the nearby South Sea Club or repurposing an unused tennis court at the FSC compound. Bennion underscored the need to preserve the bowling tradition, which fosters both social and business networking opportunities within Lautoka.

For Bennion and many others, the closure of the club represents more than just a loss of sporting facilities; it signifies a shift away from a cherished lifestyle that has nurtured deep personal connections and a strong community spirit. As club members cling to their fond memories of competition and camaraderie, there remains a hopeful outlook that they will successfully establish a new space for bowling, ensuring that the legacy of this esteemed club continues to thrive in Lautoka.
