The Lautoka Bowling Club, a cherished institution that has fostered community and camaraderie for over fifty years, is facing an uncertain future. Following the sale of the land by the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC), the club is set to officially close between the end of March and early April. The news has struck a chord with its members, many of whom have developed lifelong friendships while engaging in the sport.

David Bennion, a life member of the club, expressed the deep emotional impact the closure will have. “This place has been a big part of our lives. It’s not just about bowling; it’s about people, friendships, and staying active,” he remarked. The Lautoka Bowling Club was established during the era of the Colonial Sugar Refinery in the 1950s, primarily serving expatriates before becoming more inclusive in the late 1960s and early 1970s. This shift allowed local players to join, transforming the club into a vibrant community hub.

Bennion reminisces about his introduction to bowling, which began in the late 1980s at the behest of the then FSC general manager, and highlights the moments that have defined his journey, including personal achievements alongside his wife. Their shared experiences in competitive bowling contributed significantly to their lives. “It keeps you moving, and it keeps you young,” he added.

As the club prepares for closure, members are actively seeking alternatives to maintain the sport within the community. One potential solution involves discussions to create a new bowling green at the South Sea Club or repurposing an unused tennis court at the FSC compound. Bennion expressed the importance of keeping the bowling tradition alive, emphasizing the social and business networking opportunities the club provides to the local community.

For Bennion and others, the impending closure signifies more than just the loss of a place to play; it represents a significant shift away from a lifestyle that has fostered personal connections and community spirit. As members hold onto memories of competition and camaraderie, there remains a glimmer of hope that they will find a new home for bowling in Lautoka, preserving the rich legacy of this beloved club.
