Residents of Lau are voicing their frustrations regarding persistent water supply problems that are affecting their daily lives. These critical issues were highlighted during the recent National Rural Development Plan consultation for the Eastern Division.
Safaira Tagivuni, the representative for Lau, conveyed that the islands are suffering from severe water shortages. She called for assistance in developing technologies aimed at purifying salt water for safe drinking. Tagivuni mentioned a successful project in Navatu and advocated for a similar system to be established in Lau. “We have a lot of sea water, and our only option is to develop infrastructure to help purify it just like that was done in Navatu. That would help a lot on the island,” she remarked.
The lack of clean water is not only a matter of hydration; it greatly impacts cooking, hygiene, and other fundamental daily activities. Residents are urging the government and relevant agencies to take action by providing sustainable solutions and the necessary infrastructure for water purification.
Highlighting the urgency of their situation, the Lau community is pushing for immediate intervention to enhance their quality of life. With the implementation of effective water supply solutions, the residents of Lau can look forward to a more sustainable and healthier future.
