Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara is taking proactive steps to address the political void left by the recent passing of Vatimi Rayalu, the former Minister for Agriculture. Traditional leaders in Lau Province are signaling their intent to play an active role in selecting the next parliamentary representative.
During a recent meeting of the Bose Vanua o Lau, Tui Nayau Ratu Tevita emphasized the necessity of maintaining strong leadership in Suva to uphold the development priorities of Lau. He remarked on the existing political vacuum in representation from the yasana, asserting that the community must collectively decide on a candidate who can effectively work towards the province’s growth.
“There is a vacuum there in terms of political leadership,” he noted, adding that the provincial council would need to come together to choose a suitable candidate for this role. While Ratu Tevita did not dismiss the possibility of participating in future elections, his focus remains firmly on the development of Lau, prioritizing initiatives such as enhancing shipping services, strengthening family structures to combat issues like drug use and HIV, and fostering economic empowerment for the youth and women in the community.
He expressed confidence in a collaborative approach, stating, “Our own means… is the best development you can have,” highlighting the necessity of empowering the community to advance their development goals with the aid of enforcement agencies where relevant.
Ratu Tevita’s commitment to enhancing community solidarity and cultural identity reflects a broader trend within the Lau community, especially as nearly 90 percent of chiefly titles have been filled recently. This resurgence of leadership roles is seen as a beacon of hope and renewal, emphasizing a revitalized connection to heritage while meeting contemporary challenges.
Such efforts align closely with sentiments expressed in earlier articles, which portrayed Ratu Tevita as a figure of unity, dedicated to the advancement of governance and collaboration between local traditions and governmental efforts. Together, the Lau community is poised to embrace opportunities for growth and resilience, acting in concert to uphold their cultural values and forge a promising future under renewed leadership.
