Late-May Nor’easter Brings Rain to NYC Ahead of Memorial Day Weekend

A late-season nor’easter swept into New York City on Wednesday afternoon, delivering unwelcome rain and cooler temperatures just before the Memorial Day weekend. The National Weather Service forecasts that the storm will bring approximately 1.3 inches of rain to the five boroughs from Wednesday through Friday morning.

This weather system, unusual for late May, is characterized by strong winds originating from the Northeast, resulting in a mix of rain and chilly temperatures. While typically occurring from September to April, a nor’easter this late in the season is certainly rare. Meteorologists expect thermometers in Manhattan to hover in the mid-50s on both Wednesday and Thursday, but temperatures are projected to rise into the low 70s by Sunday afternoon, just in time for the holiday weekend.

For those planning outdoor activities during the three-day weekend, there is good news: the chance of rain is expected to drop below 20% on Saturday and Sunday, according to predictions, making for more pleasant conditions. Wind speeds in the city should remain manageable at around 15-20 mph, though beachgoers on Long Island may experience gusts reaching up to 50 mph.

While New York City braces for primarily rain and wind, meteorologists warn that areas farther north in New England could face more severe weather, including potential snow accumulation in regions above 1,500 feet in Maine and New Hampshire. As the storm system lingers, rain is anticipated in those areas into Saturday and Sunday before finally dissipating by Monday.

Overall, while the nor’easter poses some challenges in the short term, the arrival of warmer weather and reduced precipitation over the Memorial Day weekend offers hope for a more enjoyable end to the month for residents and visitors alike.
