Late Defensive Stand Seals Stanford Victory Over Florida State

Stanford, California – In a thrilling finish, Stanford managed to secure a 20-13 victory over Florida State on Saturday night, marking the Seminoles’ ninth consecutive loss in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Cardinal’s defense stepped up in the final moments, stopping Florida State’s backup quarterback Kevin Sperry just inches short of the goal line on an untimed down.

The game seemed to take a dramatic turn when Sperry connected with Micahi Danzy for a 49-yard gain, placing the Seminoles at the 9-yard line with just two seconds remaining. After an initial incomplete pass, Stanford’s Che Ojarikre was flagged for pass interference, granting Florida State a fresh opportunity from the 2-yard line. However, Sperry’s shovel pass to Jahsiah Galvan was halted just short of the end zone by Stanford defenders Matt Rose and Galvan, resulting in a tense review before the Cardinal could celebrate their hard-fought win.

Despite struggling throughout the season, Florida State (3-4, 0-4) displayed resilience, almost pulling off a stunning comeback. Earlier in the game, Stanford capitalized on an offsides penalty against Edwin Joseph that shifted the momentum and allowed them to score a 7-yard touchdown pass from Ben Gulbranson to CJ Williams, putting the Cardinal ahead 10-3.

The Seminoles displayed signs of disarray, accumulating penalties that contributed to their downfall, including a delay of game just before their first snap and a critical special teams penalty that allowed Stanford to extend their lead. Stanford’s defense proved to be pivotal, particularly with a late stop on a fourth-and-2 situation that helped seal the game.

Gulbranson left the game in the second quarter due to injury, but backup quarterback Elijah Brown effectively guided the Cardinal to a 20-10 lead with a methodical 13-play, 94-yard drive culminating in a touchdown run by Cole Tabb.

This win not only boosts Stanford’s confidence but also marks their third consecutive home victory, matching their total wins from the previous four seasons. Coach Frank Reich’s interim leadership appears to be rejuvenating the team, demonstrating a more competitive spirit compared to the last few years under former coaches.

Looking ahead, Florida State will host Wake Forest on November 1, while Stanford prepares to face Miami next Saturday. With the season still ongoing, both teams have opportunities to improve and build on their performances.
