The U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, Christopher Landau, emphasized that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East will not hinder the United States from pursuing its economic and security interests in the Pacific region. In a recent post on social media platform X, Landau stated, “The current conflict in the Middle East doesn’t stop American diplomacy in the rest of the world.”

Landau recently concluded a diplomatic trip to the South Pacific, which took place from February 26 to March 2, 2023. This visit followed his hosting of the Pacific Agenda investment summit in Honolulu, from February 22 to 24, where he brought together senior officials from 16 Pacific Islands and territories along with members of the American private sector.

While in Tonga, Landau had notable meetings with influential leaders, including King Tupou VI, Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala, and Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua. Reflecting on the rich history of Tonga, Landau remarked, “Tonga was never colonized and has been ruled by kings for over 1000 years. Our two countries are committed to boosting economic and security cooperation.”

During his visit, Landau signed an enhanced “ship rider” agreement to strengthen collaboration between the U.S. Coast Guard and Tongan authorities, reinforcing maritime security in the region.

In Fiji, he engaged with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to further deepen cooperation on naval affairs and economic development. An important outcome of this meeting was the signing of a US$12 million Compact Development Funding Agreement, aimed at fostering investment in Fiji with the support of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, a U.S. government foreign assistance agency.

Landau’s trip included discussions in Apia, Samoa, where he addressed shared economic and security interests, highlighting the close relationship with American Samoa. The visit culminated with the signing of an Open Skies agreement and a review of port security operations, underlining the U.S.’s commitment to enhancing safety and trade in the region.

This proactive approach from the United States illustrates a dedication to strengthening ties and partnerships across the South Pacific, even amidst global challenges, which bodes well for future collaboration and stability in the region.
