The Los Angeles Lakers have reignited talks with the New Orleans Pelicans regarding a potential trade for standout perimeter defender Herbert Jones. This discussion comes as several other teams, including the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers, have also shown significant interest in acquiring the All-Defensive wing, known for his defensive prowess in the NBA.

Insider Evan Sidery highlighted that teams are actively inquiring about Jones during this busy trade season. However, any potential trade would likely require a substantial package of assets from the Pelicans. Reports indicate that New Orleans is looking for two unprotected first-round picks along with a young rotational player to consider parting with Jones.

The Lakers face challenges in matching these demands since they currently hold only one tradeable first-round pick. Despite this limitation, they have remained persistent in their pursuit of Jones since early December, prior to his trade eligibility. According to The Athletic’s Dan Woike, Jones has been frequently linked to the Lakers by rival scouts, particularly as the team has struggled defensively, ranking 25th in defensive ratings and looking to enhance their perimeter defense.

In addition to Jones, the Lakers have reportedly expressed interest in several other players, including Andrew Wiggins from the Miami Heat, Yves Missi from the Pelicans, Daniel Gafford from the Mavericks, Nic Claxton from the Nets, Keon Ellis from the Kings, and Miles Bridges from the Hornets. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin has suggested names like Peyton Watson from the Nuggets and De’Andre Hunter from the Cavaliers as potential trade targets, with Jonathan Kuminga from the Warriors also mentioned.

The Lakers possess several expiring contracts, including those of Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, Maxi Kleber, and second-year wing Dalton Knecht, which could be involved in trades along with their solitary tradeable first-round pick scheduled for 2031 or 2032. However, interest in players like Hachimura and Knecht has reportedly been limited, complicating the Lakers’ trading strategy. Moreover, it has been indicated that the team is unlikely to part with their first-round pick due to long-term plans, particularly the potential availability of superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo in 2026.

The trade deadline on February 5 looms, and if the Lakers decide to relinquish their first-round pick prior to this date, they might find themselves with restricted draft assets for future moves, making their trade decisions even more critical. The season ahead hinges on their ability to bolster their roster and improve their defensive standings, and the pursuit of a talented defender like Herbert Jones could be a step in the right direction.
