The Los Angeles Lakers have officially signed free agent center Alex Len, addressing a pressing need for depth at the center position. This move comes after the team’s attempted trade for Mark Williams, which was rescinded due to the latter failing his physical examination.
Len’s arrival will help fill the void left by the recent trade of Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks, where they acquired superstar Luka Dončić. With Jaxson Hayes as the only other center on the roster, Len’s presence is expected to bolster the team’s frontcourt. To make space for Len, the Lakers are waiving Christian Wood.
The Lakers initially planned to add Williams, sending rookie Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, and two draft picks in exchange. However, that deal fell through when Williams reportedly encountered multiple health issues, making him unable to pass the Lakers’ physical. Williams’ injury history is noteworthy; he has missed nearly 60% of games during his time with the Charlotte Hornets, only managing to play 23 games this season due to a foot injury. The Hornets are currently in the process of disputing the failed physical.
Meanwhile, Len, who had averaged 1.4 points and 1.8 rebounds in limited playing time this season with the Sacramento Kings and was recently waived by the Washington Wizards, brings much-needed size to the Lakers as they aim to avoid relying solely on small-ball strategies for the remainder of the season.
The team has been performing well, winning six consecutive games, including a victory against the Utah Jazz in Dončić’s debut. Their current record stands at 32-19, and they are set to face the Jazz again shortly before the All-Star break.
