Los Angeles Lakers guard Bronny James is facing increased competition for playing time following the franchise’s decision to sign G League standout Kobe Bufkin to a 10-day contract. This development marks a significant shift for James, as he must now vie for minutes during his second season in the NBA.

Kobe Bufkin, a former first-round pick selected by the Atlanta Hawks at No. 15 overall in the 2023 NBA Draft, had his sophomore season cut short due to a shoulder injury. Subsequently traded to the Brooklyn Nets, he showcased his talent in the Summer League but was ultimately released. Since then, Bufkin has excelled in the G League with the South Bay Lakers, earning the opportunity to join the Lakers on a temporary basis.

With the announcement of this signing, the Lakers are adding a player who has been performing at a high level in the G League, putting further pressure on Bronny James to secure his place within the rotation. The Lakers initially selected James in the late second round of the 2024 NBA Draft, where expectations were arguably tempered due to the challenges faced by players drafted in similar positions. However, James’ notable family lineage has amplified the scrutiny surrounding his performance.

Throughout his rookie season, James struggled to consistently find his footing, logging an average of 6.7 minutes per game across 27 appearances. While he has seen a slight uptick in playing time this season to 7.5 minutes over 20 games, he has yet to establish himself as a regular contributor. This inconsistency has allowed other players, like Nick Smith Jr., to command more playing time, further complicating James’ situation.

As Bufkin joins the Lakers, the spotlight intensifies on James, whose opportunity to shine may be significantly impacted. While there is a possibility Bufkin will return to the G League after his 10-day stint, the immediate pressure on James to perform and secure his role is undeniable. This scenario creates a dynamic environment that could push both players to elevate their game, ultimately benefiting the Lakers as they navigate the rest of the season.
