Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick has announced that rookie forward Adou Thiero is set to make his NBA debut following an upgrade in his injury status. Thiero, who was previously unavailable due to recovery from knee surgery he underwent during his final collegiate season at Arkansas, was cleared to play for Friday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans. However, the Lakers decided to ease him into the rotation, opting for caution over risk.
Redick stated that Thiero is expected to participate in Saturday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks, which will conclude the Lakers’ five-game road trip. He emphasized the importance of allowing Thiero to grow on the court, noting that while he has participated in modified practices, true development comes from game experience.
“I mean, in terms of his growth, I haven’t seen him play yet,” Redick expressed during a pre-game press conference. “But if he is available, and all goes well over the next 24 hours, I’m hoping he gets some run at some point in the next 48 hours.”
Thiero’s cautious management aligns with the Lakers’ overall strategy following his recovery. Redick pointed out that the organization did not oversee Thiero’s rehabilitation post-surgery, hence the emphasis on careful progression. He stated, “We look at this year as a developmental year and there’s no reason for us to push his body and create a long-term problem.”
In his last collegiate season, Thiero played 27 games, averaging 15.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 27.5 minutes per game. Although he continues to refine his offensive skills, he is expected to contribute high-energy minutes and solid defense for the Lakers as they navigate through their season.
The Lakers are currently positioned with a 2-2 record in their road trip and look forward to a stronger performance as Thiero enters the lineup. This cautious approach signals the team’s commitment to nurturing their young talent while aiming for long-term success.
