As the February trade deadline approaches, the Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly revisiting discussions with the Miami Heat about acquiring forward Andrew Wiggins. According to Evan Sidery of Forbes, the Lakers are circling back to negotiate a deal for Wiggins, who has been a key target for the team since the summer.
Wiggins is currently in his first full season with Miami after being acquired in a trade that sent Jimmy Butler to the Golden State Warriors last February. He has put together a solid season so far, averaging 15.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists over 26 games, while shooting an impressive 46.8% from the field and 38.8% from three-point range.
Despite the interest from the Lakers, the Heat have remained firm on their demands for draft picks as part of any potential trade. If discussions progress, the Lakers have enough salary-cap flexibility, with options including Rui Hachimura and other expiring contracts, to match Wiggins’ $28.2 million salary this season.
As Wiggins only has one year remaining on his contract beyond this season, he could be a valuable addition not only for the Lakers but also for other playoff-contending teams, such as the Milwaukee Bucks, who have also been mentioned in connection with the player. His skills as a reliable 3-point shooter would significantly bolster the Lakers’ perimeter defense, which has struggled in recent times.
In light of the ongoing negotiations, the potential acquisition of Wiggins could provide a substantial boost to Los Angeles’ ambitions this season, as they seek to enhance their roster ahead of the playoffs.
