The NBA offseason has kicked off with several teams making significant moves, but the Los Angeles Lakers are still searching for roster enhancements. Currently, the Lakers lack a center and have several gaps to fill, and although they possess a taxpayer mid-level exception of around $5 million, they aim to actively pursue both trades and free agency opportunities, according to General Manager Rob Pelinka.
The Lakers have shown strong interest in 23-year-old Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz as their preferred option at the center position. Kessler’s impressive stats from last season—averaging 11.1 points, 12.2 rebounds, including a league-leading 4.6 offensive rebounds, and 2.4 blocks—make him a desirable fit for L.A. However, the Jazz have set a high asking price for the young player, reportedly requiring multiple first-round picks, which has previously stalled talks.
In addition to Kessler, the Lakers are also exploring other center options, including Onyeka Okongwu from the Atlanta Hawks, Nic Claxton from the Brooklyn Nets, and Robert Williams III from the Portland Trail Blazers. Furthermore, they are considering experienced free agents like Clint Capela, Al Horford, and Brook Lopez, although none of these players are seen as a long-term solution at the center position.
The need for additional wing players has also been highlighted, with the Lakers having drafted Adou Thiero from Arkansas, but the team recognizes the necessity for more veteran depth in this area.
With Pelinka committed to strengthening the roster, there’s potential for the Lakers to make impactful changes as they prepare for the upcoming season, providing fans with a hopeful outlook for the team’s future directions.
