The Los Angeles Lakers have demonstrated their confidence in JJ Redick’s abilities as a head coach by extending his contract ahead of his second season with the team. General Manager Rob Pelinka announced the extension on Thursday, highlighting Redick’s successful debut season with the Lakers.
Initially signing a four-year contract worth approximately $32 million for the 2024-25 season, Redick led the Lakers to an impressive 50-32 record during his first year. However, their playoff journey was cut short by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round.
Redick’s transition to coaching was swift following his retirement as a player in 2021 after a 15-year NBA career. Prior to joining the Lakers, he served as an analyst for ESPN, bringing his extensive experience on the court to his commentary.
Despite having no prior coaching experience, the Lakers entrusted him with the head coach role after being reportedly turned down by other candidates like Dan Hurley. Hurley, the UConn head coach, was offered a six-year deal by the Lakers but chose to remain with his team.
Pelinka expressed the team’s endorsement of Redick by stating that the extension solidifies Redick’s position as a crucial leader in guiding both coaching and on-court strategies. The move indicates that the franchise sees significant potential in Redick’s leadership to steer them towards future successes.
This contract extension for Redick follows a notable three-year extension for Luka Dončić, emphasizing a period of strategic stability for the organization. The Lakers appear to be committed to cultivating a strong, cohesive unit under Redick’s guidance.
