Lakers’ Bold Moves: Investing in Young Talent for a Championship Push!

The Los Angeles Lakers have a storied history of identifying potential talent, particularly in the second round of the NBA Draft and among undrafted free agents. Players like Alex Caruso and Austin Reaves, who went undrafted, have established successful careers, while second-round picks such as Ivica Zubac have become reliable starters. This trend speaks volumes about the effectiveness of the Lakers’ scouting department.

In the recent 2025 NBA Draft, the Lakers made headlines by trading up to pick Arkansas forward Adou Thiero, who possesses a high ceiling provided he enhances his shooting skills. In addition to Thiero, the Lakers are set to fill their two open two-way contracts with 7-footer Christian Koloko and forward Chris Manon, according to sources from ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Koloko, who played for the Lakers in the Summer League and participated in 37 games last season, is noted for his capabilities in rim-running and shot-blocking, making him an appealing prospect for a team that needs to bolster its talent pool. Meanwhile, Manon, who went undrafted from Vanderbilt, showcased his skills during Summer League with the Golden State Warriors, emphasizing his defensive prowess and athleticism. Although he may not have an extensive outside shooting game, Manon’s tenacity and ability to contribute in various aspects will likely appeal to Lakers head coach JJ Redick.

It seems that with these signings, Eric Dixon, who was set to play for the Lakers in Summer League but was sidelined by a foot injury, will miss his opportunity with the team.

Recently, former Lakers player Byron Scott expressed that while the current roster appears strong, it might still need a few more key additions to be considered true championship contenders. This sentiment echoes the ongoing desire for the Lakers to continually evolve and strengthen their lineup.

Hopeful signs are emerging for the Lakers as they look to build a promising future by investing in young talents and remaining strategic in their roster decisions.
