Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba, the Tui Nayau, has underscored the vital importance of involving women and youth in the five-year development plan of Lakeba Nexus Holding Pte Ltd, deeming their participation essential for the sustainable growth of the island. His statements were made during an awareness gathering at the Kinoya Methodist Church hall in Nasinu.
Ratu Tevita highlighted not only the need for inclusive development but also celebrated his recent installation as Turaga na Tui Nayau, Tui Lau, and Sau ni vanua o Lau in July 2025, which marks a significant milestone in his leadership.
The new five-year initiative builds on a previous development framework and aligns with Lakeba’s Economic Strategic Plan aimed at 2028. He emphasized that support and empowerment are crucial for representatives from committees, particularly those associated with small and medium enterprises and cooperatives, to foster structured business opportunities within the new development framework.
Aisake Taito, a representative from the committee, echoed these calls, stressing the necessity for engaging youth in meaningful economic opportunities to address various social challenges faced by this group. He pointed out that by empowering young people through job creation, training, and active participation, significant progress could be made in reducing issues such as criminal behavior and alcohol abuse on the island.
The discussions highlighted the overarching goal of the five-year plan to promote inclusive growth, nurture community ownership, and ensure long-term economic stability for Lakeba. Both women and youths are positioned to have active roles in shaping the future of the island.
Additionally, the meeting provided insights into the Lakeba Pine Project, which is expected to play a critical role in boosting the island’s pine forestry sector. This initiative includes a signed contract with Tropik Wood, placing Lakeba on track for developing commercial forestry operations. The plan outlines a seven-month preparatory phase filled with milestones such as constructing a jetty at Wainiyabia and engaging contractors for the project.
This preparation phase will also involve securing funding for harvesting and sawmilling, acquiring necessary machinery, completing recruitment processes, and obtaining the relevant licenses. Taito reiterated the importance of these steps to ensure readiness for the full implementation of operations as they commence.
Looking ahead, the first annual general meeting of Lakeba Nexus Holding Pte Ltd is set for December 2027 in Tubou, Lakeba, where audited accounts will be presented. This initiative marks a determined commitment to sustainable development and economic progress on Lakeba, offering hope for a thriving future for its community.
