The Tui Nayau, Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba, has emphasized the need for enhanced participation of women and youth in the five-year development plan of Lakeba Nexus Holding Pte Ltd, underscoring their involvement as crucial for the sustainable progress of the island. His remarks were made during an awareness meeting held at the Kinoya Methodist Church hall in Nasinu.
In addition to advocating for inclusive development, Ratu Tevita acknowledged the successful completion of his installation as Turaga na Tui Nayau, Tui Lau, and Sau ni vanua o Lau in July 2025 following a traditional ceremony, signifying a significant milestone in his leadership journey.
The five-year initiative is structured around a previous development framework and is aligned with Lakeba’s Economic Strategic Plan stretching to 2028. Ratu Tevita stressed that representatives from committees, particularly those linked to small and medium enterprises as well as cooperatives, require support and empowerment to facilitate structured business opportunities under the new development plan.
Committee representative Aisake Taito echoed these sentiments by pointing out the critical need for youth involvement. He argued that meaningful economic engagement for young individuals is key to tackling various social issues faced by this demographic. Taito noted that empowering youth through employment, training, and active participation could substantially reduce problems such as criminal activities and alcohol abuse on the island.
The discussions also underscored the broader aim of the five-year plan to foster inclusive growth, community ownership, and long-term economic stability for Lakeba, ensuring that both women and youths play active roles in the island’s future development.
Further, the meeting detailed plans for the Lakeba Pine Project, which is viewed as a pivotal step for the island’s pine forestry sector. This new initiative includes a contract signed with Tropik Wood, positioning Lakeba on the path to commercial forestry operations. The outlined business plan includes a seven-month preparation phase marked by various milestones, such as the construction of a jetty at Wainiyabia and the pursuit of contractors for the project.
Additionally, the plan encompasses securing funding for harvesting and sawmilling operations, acquiring necessary machinery, completing recruitment, and obtaining relevant licenses. Aisake Taito highlighted the importance of these preparatory steps to ensure readiness for full implementation when operations begin.
The first annual general meeting of Lakeba Nexus Holding Pte Ltd is scheduled for December 2027 in Tubou, Lakeba, where audited accounts will be presented. This initiative signifies a commitment to sustainable development and economic growth on Lakeba, instilling hope for a prosperous future for its community.
