The journey of young female hockey players is being illuminated through the inspiring stories of those who have paved the way, particularly Laila Edwards. The first chapter of a project documenting her journey began in Madison, Wisconsin, where eight girls, including 17-year-old defenseman Vaneshka Caraballo, experienced an unforgettable locker room tour and met Edwards, defenseman Caroline “KK” Harvey, and Chayla Edwards, Laila’s sister and a former Wisconsin defenseman.
Caraballo, who is set to attend Buffalo State University and try out for the hockey team, emphasized how the principles of hockey have equipped her with the confidence to pursue a degree in business administration and sports management. Her long-term goal aligns closely with her admiration for Garvin, who is committed to continuing the legacy of inspiring future generations in the sport.
The impact of role models like Edwards, the first Black woman to compete in the Olympics for U.S. hockey, is significant. Caraballo expressed how Edwards’s achievements provide vital opportunities and serve as a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes, encouraging them that with hard work, they can rise from their backgrounds to excel in the sport.
The influence of Edwards and her teammates extends beyond the ice. Harvey’s goal at 3:45 during a crucial match helped Team USA secure an early 1-0 lead, emphasizing the importance of representation in the game. With Hilary Knight’s secondary assist, Harvey matched Jenny Potter’s U.S. record for Olympic scoring since women’s ice hockey debuted in 1998. Edwards’s goal solidified Team USA’s dominance after a remarkable victory over Canada in the 2025 Rivalry Series.
Garvin highlighted the significance of these milestones, stating that they represent a new beginning. Each achievement sends a powerful message to young girls across the country, especially those from diverse backgrounds, affirming that they can pursue their passions in hockey and beyond. As more young girls enter the sport, the future of women’s hockey looks bright, with doors to opportunity swinging wide open.
