Fiji's Drua Academy Seeks Next Generation Rugby Talent

Lagakali on the Brink of Fijian Drua Academy Selection

Young rugby talent George Lagakali from Suva Grammar School is making significant strides in his athletic career as he navigates the challenging transition from school-level rugby to the professional environment of the Fijian Drua Academy. Lagakali, an Under-16 openside flanker, is among the 56 young athletes vying for a coveted spot in the Academy’s top 30 under-16 squad. This selection is crucial for aspiring professional players aiming to represent Fiji on both national and international platforms.

Lagakali notes the heightened intensity and demanding nature of training sessions at the Drua Academy compared to what he has experienced at the school level. He is appreciative of the opportunity provided by the selection committee, viewing it as a vital step on his path toward playing Super Rugby and representing Fiji.

The Fijian Drua Academy is methodically whittling down its selection from an initial 250-plus players to secure both the under-16 and under-17 groups. Only the top 30 players in each category will be given contracts for the Drua Academy Programme for 2025–2026.

This effort by the Drua Academy forms part of a larger mission to develop Fijian rugby talent from within the local communities, providing players with a well-structured route to professional rugby. The academy’s approach focuses on harnessing the natural abilities of young athletes by subjecting them to customized, intensive training programs based on their specific strengths and needs. This initiative is regarded as a promising endeavor for the future of rugby in Fiji, underscoring the nation’s commitment to fostering domestic sports talent and maintaining a consistent flow of players capable of competing at elite levels like the Super Rugby Pacific.

By investing in such a thorough development program, Fiji is not only promoting individual player advancement but also strengthening its rich sporting heritage. These opportunities inspire young athletes like Lagakali to pursue their dreams, significantly bolstering Fiji’s vibrant rugby culture and fortifying its position within the global rugby arena. Through such strategic nurturing programs, Fiji is preparing its youth to embrace and excel in professional rugby’s forthcoming challenges, ensuring the country’s presence on international stages continues to thrive.
