Lafayette Schools Go Remote: Flood Threat Forces Shift

Lafayette Parish School System has announced that all students will shift to remote learning on Wednesday, May 7, due to an impending flood threat from heavy rainfall expected to begin on Tuesday evening. As a precaution, all after-school activities and a special School Board meeting scheduled for that day have been canceled.

Students are reminded that they must complete and submit all assigned coursework upon their return to in-person classes to avoid receiving an absence mark.

The National Weather Service in Lake Charles warns of significant rainfall, with the most severe downpours anticipated overnight into Wednesday morning. This comes as rivers and tributaries in the area are already at elevated levels, heightening the risk of flooding.

While classes will resume on Tuesday, all scheduled events for that evening have been postponed. The school system intends to provide an update regarding the decision on school operations for Thursday, May 8, no later than 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Families can expect to receive any relevant updates through J-Campus and the LPSS social media platforms. The administration appreciates the community’s cooperation and will continue to monitor the weather situation closely, ensuring all families are kept informed of any changes to the school schedule.

This proactive response by LPSS highlights the importance of student safety and adaptability in the face of inclement weather.
