Labor Day Openings: What You Need to Know!

On Monday, September 2, banks and post offices will be closed in observance of Labor Day, while most major restaurant, grocery, and retail chains will remain open. The stock market will also be closed for the holiday.

Major retailers like Walmart, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, and Target will welcome customers on Labor Day, though Costco will be an exception, as its warehouses will be closed.

Labor Day, a federal holiday, honors “the social and economic achievements of American workers.” This holiday has its origins in the late 19th century, arising from labor activists’ efforts to establish a federal day to recognize the invaluable contributions of workers to America’s strength and prosperity. The first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882, in New York City. By 1894, 23 additional states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed legislation designating the first Monday in September as a national holiday.
