Labor Day: A Day of Hard Work for Many in Pursuit of the American Dream

HOUSTON – Today, like every first Monday in September, Labor Day is celebrated. For many workers, it is a day off; however, for others, it is another day of hard work.

Victor, a Venezuelan migrant working at a car wash, does not take the day off. Instead, he works tirelessly to send money back to his family in Venezuela. “Since I arrived, I have worked every day, and thank God, it’s been good for me. I have no complaints about this country; I’m here to fight and work,” said Victor.

The origins of Labor Day date back to the 19th century when workers fought for better working conditions and shorter hours. Today, many continue to work on this holiday, prioritizing the need for income over rest.

Catalina, a single mother, wasn’t even aware it was a holiday, as her priority is to provide for her daughter. “I only find out because my daughter studies, and she tells me, ‘Mommy, today is a holiday.’ It’s just a normal day for me; I’ve never had a holiday, so I didn’t know that this is a holiday.”

Whether cleaning cars, cooking at food trucks, or working in various other jobs, their efforts reflect the determination and sacrifice that characterize the Hispanic community in pursuit of the American Dream.
