Shoppers in Labasa are facing rising vegetable prices this Christmas as limited supplies reach the market. Despite the increases, residents are still purchasing fresh produce for the holiday season, recognizing that this time is essential for both consumers and farmers alike.
Waisea Makulau, the President of the Labasa Vendors Association, noted that the price hike was anticipated due to months of low vegetable supply and the usual surge in demand during the festive season. He reported that prices have climbed, with cabbage costing $7 per bundle and tubua priced at $4 per bundle. “That is the reality, but people are still buying because we all need these for Christmas,” he stated.
One significant factor behind the increase in prices is the ongoing limitation in supply, a situation that has been evident since earlier this year, when the availability of produce decreased amid rising demand.
Farmer Iliesa Tulaba from Waisali expressed that Christmas is one of the busiest times for farmers, many of whom opt to sell their harvests directly at the market. “For us farmers, this is an annual event to come and sell at the Labasa Market. We know people need root crops and vegetables, so it’s about bringing fresh produce straight from the farm,” he explained.
On a positive note, root crops are still available in good numbers at the Labasa Market, with some farmers traveling from as far away as Savusavu to contribute to the festive offerings. Furthermore, many of these farmers take the opportunity to complete their own Christmas shopping following their market activities before heading back to their villages.
This positive community spirit shows that despite the challenges posed by rising prices, residents and farmers are committed to ensuring a joyful celebration this holiday season.
