Labasa Sugar Mill Delivers Smooth Operations, Boosting Northern Fiji's Cane Industry

Labasa Sugar Mill Turbocharges Northern Fiji’s Sugar Industry

Cane lorry drivers in Labasa are witnessing significant improvements at the Labasa Sugar Mill, marking a departure from the disruptions seen in previous seasons. The mill’s smooth daily operations are being praised by drivers, who attribute this to effective enhancements made at the facility. Mohammed Shameem, a farmer from Seaqaqa, underscores the mill’s importance to the Northern economy, affirming the essential role of sugar production in the region.

Lorry driver Amrika Prasad echoes these positive sentiments, noting that the waiting times for unloading have improved considerably, even amidst minor technical glitches. Prasad acknowledges the ongoing efforts by the mill’s management to accommodate the needs of all farmers. The Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, has also praised the hard work of the northern cane farmers, which has led to a robust production output this season.

In prior reports, the Labasa Sugar Mill was commended for its efficient Tonnes Cane to Tonnes Sugar (TCTS) ratio, achieving approximately 9%, which surpasses many other mills operating at higher ratios. This achievement is attributed to the unwavering commitment of the mill workers and strategic international partnerships, including the collaboration with Indian engineers, which have been instrumental in boosting performance despite the challenges associated with the mill’s aging infrastructure.

Historically, the Labasa Mill’s outstanding performance can be traced back to substantial investments in upgrades and maintenance. This season, the mill has once again exceeded expectations, handling a significant volume of sugar cane with superior operational efficiency compared to mills in Viti Levu, which are beset by mechanical issues and extended wait times.

The sustained success of the Labasa Sugar Mill reflects the resilience of the community and the strategic initiatives of the Ministry and the Fiji Sugar Corporation. Collectively, these efforts ensure a promising future for Fiji’s sugar industry, highlighting its critical role in bolstering the northern economy and providing stability for local farmers. The mill’s ongoing commitment to efficiency and innovation is a beacon of hope for continued growth and prosperity in the region’s agricultural sector.
