Cane lorry drivers in Labasa have reported significant improvements at the Labasa Sugar Mill compared to previous seasons. The drivers are pleased with the uninterrupted daily operations at the mill, attributing the lack of major issues to effective enhancements. Seaqaqa farmer Mohammed Shameem expressed satisfaction, reinforcing the view that sugar remains a vital component of the Northern economy.
This positive sentiment is shared by lorry driver Amrika Prasad, who noted improved waiting times for drivers and farmers despite minor mechanical issues. Prasad appreciates the mill’s ongoing efforts to cater to all farmers’ needs. Complementing these views, the Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, has recognized the northern cane farmers’ contributions, leading to robust production this season.
In previous reports, the Labasa Sugar Mill was recognized for achieving a highly efficient Tonnes Cane to Tonnes Sugar (TCTS) ratio of around 9%, compared to other mills operating at higher ratios. The consistent dedication of mill workers and strategic international collaborations, such as bringing in engineers from India, have been pivotal in improving performance despite the challenges posed by the mill’s age.
Historically, the Labasa Mill has been noted for its exceptional performance, thanks to substantial investments in mill upgrades and maintenance. This season, the mill has surpassed expectations once again, processing significant tonnes of sugar cane and maintaining a better operational efficiency compared to other mills in Viti Levu, which face challenges such as mechanical failures and prolonged waiting times.
