A major upgrade is underway for the Labasa–Savusavu cross-island link road, aiming to tackle one of Fiji’s most pressing road safety concerns. Aviation Minister Viliame Gavoka recently announced that a design and supervision contract was awarded in May, marking the start of an 11-month design phase ahead of the construction tender process.
The ambitious project will focus on establishing safer road alignments and incorporating features such as scenic lookouts, rest stops, navigational signage, and enhancements to the roadway leading to the Waisali Rainforest Reserve. Minister Gavoka emphasized the urgent need for this upgrade, citing a concerning rise in accidents along the northern corridor.
“There are simply too many unnecessary accidents and fatalities on the Labasa–Savusavu roads,” Gavoka expressed, adding that he is hopeful the initiative will significantly curtail, if not eliminate, such tragedies. He highlighted that the road safety issue is not limited to the north but is a national concern that requires urgent attention.
Beyond safety improvements, the upgraded route is anticipated to enhance the travel experience for tourists while strengthening the northern region’s transport infrastructure. This project embodies a wider commitment to advancing road safety and infrastructure improvements across Fiji, ultimately creating a safer environment for both locals and visitors. The community can look forward to a future with reduced accidents and a more enjoyable journey through the picturesque landscape, promising an overall enhancement in quality of life in the region.
