The condition of the roads in Labasa has reached alarming levels, with potholes now being compared to large lovo pits, according to Mahen Prasad, the chair of the Labasa Taxi Association. He highlighted that the damaged roads have transformed from a mere inconvenience into a serious safety hazard for all road users, including motorists, pedestrians, and public transport operators.

Mr. Prasad pointed out the dangers posed by these large potholes, particularly at night or during heavy rain when they are hard to detect. Many drivers have reported damage to their vehicles from hitting these holes, which frequently lead to issues with suspension systems, tyres, and wheel alignments. Some taxi drivers have even had to take their vehicles off the road for repairs, resulting in a loss of income and delays for their passengers.

He also emphasized that the roads that have previously received repairs by contractors haven’t withstood the test of time, with patched sections breaking apart within weeks. The persistent bad weather conditions are exacerbating the situation, causing travel around Labasa to become increasingly perilous and uncomfortable.

In response to the growing concerns, the Fiji Roads Authority acknowledged that the current wet weather has severely affected the state of roads in Labasa and throughout the northern region. They noted that the rural road network is particularly vulnerable, experiencing recurring potholes due to substantial rainfall. Additionally, areas prone to flooding and low-level crossings have faced washouts, making them challenging to navigate.

Regarding the funding for road maintenance and pothole repairs, the FRA mentioned that their budget is determined by government allocations, with each division receiving resources as outlined in their yearly work program.

Despite these challenges, there is a sense of hope that with increased awareness and ongoing dialogue between the community and authorities, effective solutions can be implemented to address these pressing issues and improve road safety in Labasa.
