Labasa Netball Defies Odds in Suva for Battle of the Netters 2025

Labasa Netball Overcomes Funding Hurdles to Enter Battle of the Netters 2025 in Suva

The Labasa Netball Association has triumphed over financial hurdles to participate in the Battle of the Netters 2025 tournament in Suva. Despite facing a lack of sponsorship from local businesses and prominent individuals, the team managed to attend the event through extensive fundraising efforts. Support from family and friends was instrumental, with activities such as kava barrels and food sales being organized right up to their departure. These efforts were crucial in covering essential expenses like uniforms and meals.

President Mere Dilawe Tikoibua of the Labasa Netball Association expressed heartfelt gratitude for the chance to return to this important competition after several years. She commended the dedication of the players who managed their own training and fundraising over two months, balancing these efforts with their personal lives. Labasa fielded two women’s open teams and one men’s team, using the platform to gain valuable experience and exposure they hope will enrich the local netball community upon their return.

The tournament is more than just a competition; it stands as a testament to resilience and the spirit of community when faced with financial challenges. The participation of the Labasa Netball Association underscores how collective determination and community backing can surmount obstacles, enabling athletes to pursue their sporting ambitions. Such tournaments play a pivotal role in fostering both personal and professional growth for players, promoting grassroots netball, and stimulating interest in the sport. As the event concludes, Labasa’s teams are eager to apply the lessons learned in Suva to enhance the development of netball in their community.
