Despite facing financial challenges, the Labasa Netball Association successfully participated in the Battle of the Netters 2025 tournament in Suva. Lacking sponsorship from local businesses and notable individuals, the team relied on fundraising efforts supported by family and friends to make the trip possible. Their fundraising included activities such as kava barrels and food sales, continuing until the day they departed to cover expenses like uniforms and meals.
President Mere Dilawe Tikoibua expressed the team’s gratitude for the opportunity to return to the event after many years. She lauded the players’ commitment, who prepared for the competition themselves over two months, balancing training and fundraising. Labasa is represented by two women’s open teams and one men’s team, aiming to gain valuable exposure and learn from the experience to benefit their local netball community back in Labasa.
This tournament serves not only as a competitive platform but also as a symbol of resilience and commitment in the face of financial adversity. The participation of the Labasa Netball Association highlights the power of community support and determination in achieving sporting goals. Such events are crucial in promoting netball at the grassroots level, fostering both personal and professional growth for participants. As the competition concludes, the Labasa teams look forward to leveraging their experiences in Suva to further develop netball in their region.
