Dr. Jaoji Vulibeci, the hospital’s medical superintendent, expressed that the situation is currently beyond the hospital’s direct control.
“We’re waiting for an upgrade to our power system, which includes the installation of a new transformer,” Dr. Vulibeci explained. He noted that while the machine is physically set up, it cannot function without the critical power enhancements required. The delays, he suggested, are likely tied to the slow approval process for funding, which is part of the Ministry of Health’s responsibilities.
The hospital has been proactive, but the inability to obtain an operational CT scan service continues to strain resources in the Northern Division, with emergency cases needing to be referred to facilities in Suva for CT scans. Dr. Vulibeci shared the unfortunate reality that residents may face long journeys for essential diagnostics until the new transformer is installed.
Despite these challenges, he remains hopeful that the matter will be resolved soon, possibly within the week. The hospital has been assuring support for patients traveling for care, covering airfare while the patients manage meal and accommodation expenses.

Previous reports have indicated significant delays in securing necessary electrical upgrades at Labasa Hospital, which is crucial for restoring full medical services.
