Labasa Hospital is grappling with unfilled senior positions, contributing to the strain on the Northern Division’s healthcare system. Medical Superintendent Dr. Jaoji Vulibeci has highlighted human resources as a significant challenge, with many medical specialists choosing to work in Suva rather than in Labasa, complicating efforts to attract and retain skilled staff.
Dr. Vulibeci noted that even those who have completed their master’s degrees often hesitate to return to Labasa. The hospital is also experiencing a shortage of pharmacists, as many opt to leave the public sector for more lucrative positions in private practice. This ongoing turnover is impacting the hospital’s accreditation, with some staff departing after just one or two years of service.
While acknowledging these pressing issues, Dr. Vulibeci assured that the Ministry is aware of the challenges and is actively seeking solutions. In the face of these difficulties, Labasa Hospital remains dedicated to providing vital services to patients, demonstrating resilience and commitment despite the ongoing staff shortages that put pressure on operations. This determination to serve the community is a positive aspect that underscores the hospital’s mission in these challenging times.
