Labasa Food Vendors Under Watch as Fiji Tightens Hygiene Rules

Food businesses in the Northern Division have received a stern warning from Divisional Health Inspector North, Vakaruru Cavuilati, to adhere strictly to food hygiene and safety standards or risk having their licenses revoked. The warning comes in response to multiple incidents in Labasa and surrounding areas, which resulted in the temporary closures of several food outlets.

Cavuilati emphasized the Ministry of Health’s capacity to shut down any business that fails to comply with the food safety regulations. Recent inspections have revealed unsatisfactory conditions, particularly in establishments lacking standard kitchens, like some home-based vendors selling cooked meals at bus terminals, roadsides, and marketplaces. He highlighted the risks posed by vendors who have not met essential hygiene standards, stating that these deficiencies could endanger public health.

To counter these issues, Cavuilati urged food vendors, particularly women’s groups operating in the industry, to participate in training sessions focused on food safety. “There are always trainings conducted on food hygiene practices, and we urge all vendors to attend these because it’s for their own benefit,” he remarked. His team will be closely monitoring food safety practices in Labasa, reinforcing a firm stance on compliance.

The call for better hygiene comes amidst rising concerns about food safety, as underscored by Labasa Market vendor Ekari Radaga, who pointed out the direct impact of food hygiene on customer health. Recent complaints have indicated a trend of food poisoning incidents among consumers, stressing the need for vendors to remain vigilant and proactive.
