Farmers in Labasa are stepping up to help families navigate the rising cost of living this Christmas by keeping the price of dalo affordable. Jona Lolo, a farmer from Naviavia in Cakaudrove, highlighted that the escalating cost of goods presents a significant challenge for urban residents. Recognizing these difficulties, farmers have made a concerted effort to lower dalo prices, thereby bringing some relief during the festive season.

Currently, dalo prices in Labasa range from as low as five dollars to up to forty dollars, with the produce frequently selling out due to high demand. Lolo reassured residents that despite general market fluctuations where prices can soar to over fifty dollars, local farmers are dedicated to supporting their community. He emphasized the importance of understanding and compassion during these challenging times, stating, “Everything is about consideration, and we as farmers understand what people are going through and the challenges they face. So don’t worry about the price.”

Another farmer, Iliesa Tulaba, echoed this sentiment, noting that while the earth provides opportunities for income, it demands hard work and commitment. He expressed a sense of fulfillment in his role: “For me, this is something I look forward to — waking up early, traveling long distances, and providing fresh and affordable dalo to customers this Christmas.”

In addition to the efforts of local farmers, authorities are also taking steps to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday season. Police are monitoring the Labasa Market area, as well as bus and taxi stands, to ensure the safety of shoppers while encouraging everyone to celebrate responsibly.

The combined efforts of farmers to keep prices down, along with increased safety measures, aim to foster a festive spirit and alleviate some financial burdens during this holiday period, showcasing the resilience and unity of the Labasa community.
