Labasa Town is poised for significant transformations as authorities prepare to relocate the fish market and establish a new bus stand in light of the upcoming closure of the Labasa Bridge. This infrastructure project is set to last between two to three years.

Paul Jaduram, chair of the Labasa Town Council, confirmed that the current site of the fish market will be utilized for construction efforts once the bridge upgrade commences. As part of these changes, the fish market will be moved to a new location.

The council has secured land adjacent to Damodar City, across from Grand Eastern, for the new fish market. Jaduram stated that discussions are ongoing with the Lands Ministry to finalize the necessary documentation. “Our teams are working around the clock to get the fish market built as soon as possible,” he expressed.

Simultaneously, plans for a new bus stand are being developed to alleviate traffic congestion caused by the bridge closure. This bus stand will be located on vacant land near Damodar City, directly opposite the New World supermarket. It will cater to the western side of Labasa, including areas such as Siberia, Batinikama, Vunivau, and Basoga, while the existing bus stand will continue serving the eastern corridor, which includes destinations like Nabouwalu, Dreketi, Savusavu, and Naseakula.

Officials from the council emphasize that these changes are essential for maintaining order and ensuring accessibility during this significant infrastructure upgrade, which represents one of the largest projects to date in the Northern region. The proactive measures taken by the authorities show a commitment to improving transportation and market facilities for the residents of Labasa, signifying a positive step forward for the community.
