Labasa Airport to Close for Six-Week Runway Upgrade

The imminent six-week closure of Labasa Airport has prompted important discussions among local stakeholders following a recent meeting between Fiji Airports officials and community representatives. Labasa Town Council chair, Paul Jaduram, confirmed that discussions took place at the Commissioner’s Office, with participation from Vinesh Dayal, president of the Labasa Chambers of Commerce. However, attempts to reach Dayal for comments were unsuccessful. Businesswoman Amelia Simmons, who also attended the meeting, acknowledged the need for the airport’s temporary shutdown, stressing the importance of planning for local business operations during this period.

Set to occur from February 16 to March 27, 2026, the closure is part of a World Bank-funded initiative under the Na Vualiku Project aimed at significant strengthening works on the airport’s runway. This upgrade is imperative for ensuring that the runway can adequately support ATR 72 aircraft. Fiji Airports emphasized that these enhancements are vital for meeting safety and operational standards. Upgrades will improve the runway’s classification rating, reduce pavement fatigue, extend its operational lifespan, and enhance the safety of flight operations.

Fiji Airports also revealed that they have been engaging with various stakeholders, including the Commissioner Northern’s Office and the Savusavu Tourism Association, to keep them informed about the project updates and to finalize transportation arrangements for passengers during the airport’s temporary closure.

While the closure may present certain challenges for local travel and the economy, it reflects a significant investment in infrastructure that will ultimately lead to safer and more reliable air transport for the region. This development is expected to foster future growth and stability for the community, reinforcing the commitment to enhancing the region’s connectivity and safety standards.
