Fiji Airports has announced that alternative arrangements have been put in place to maintain accessibility for travelers and businesses in the Northern Division during the temporary closure of Labasa Airport next month. From February 16 to March 27, the airport will undergo important runway upgrades required for ongoing compliance with international aviation safety standards. In response, Fiji Link, the domestic carrier of Fiji Airways, will offer 44 additional flights to and from Savusavu Airport, while Northern Air will provide two daily flights on the same route to accommodate the increased demand.
To ensure seamless travel, regular bus services will continue as scheduled, and passengers with direct hotel bookings in the North can use dedicated minibus pickup services. Detailed timetables and route information will be shared through Fiji Airports’ official communication channels and social media as they are confirmed.
Mesake Nawari, Chief Executive Officer of Fiji Airports, highlighted the necessity of the airport’s closure for the upgrade works, stating, “These runway upgrades are vital to addressing structural issues and ensuring ongoing compliance with international aviation safety standards.” He expressed appreciation for the public’s patience and cooperation during this important phase.
The upgrade project is part of a broader investment strategy supported by the World Bank, under the Fiji Tourism Development Program in Vanua Levu, known as the Na Vualiku Project. Nawari emphasized that these enhancements are in line with Fiji Airports’ long-term goals of developing a world-class aviation hub in the Blue Pacific, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to providing safe, reliable, and enjoyable travel experiences.
In addition to the additional flights, Fiji Airways will continue its existing schedule, which includes four daily flights between Nadi and Savusavu, as well as three weekly flights from Suva to Savusavu. The temporary closure of Labasa Airport signifies not just a maintenance activity, but also a step towards improved travel infrastructure, promising economic growth and enhanced connectivity within the Northern Division. This initiative represents a hopeful investment in the region’s future and travel safety.
