LA Protests Ignite Community Solidarity Amid ICE Raids and National Guard Deployment

Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of Los Angeles to voice their opposition against recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) immigration raids in Southern California. Demonstrations have intensified since Friday, following President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard, which many city officials, including California Governor Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass, oppose. On June 10, the situation escalated further as the Pentagon sent 700 Marines to protect federal agents and facilities amid the ongoing unrest.

The protests have highlighted local solidarity, with street vendors, such as those selling aguas frescas and bacon-wrapped hot dogs, providing crucial support to demonstrators. Reports indicate that vendors like Cinthia Soriao, Edgar Hernandez, and Sesarin Hernandez helped protesters wash out tear gas from their eyes using milk. Additionally, the community came together as employees from Compton’s Pupuseria La Ceiba assisted deputies who faced the same painful chemical dispersal.

In light of the tensions, some businesses have temporarily closed their doors. Mermaid bar, along with other establishments in Downtown LA, made the decision to pause operations on June 9 due to safety concerns stemming from ICE roundups and nearby protests.

In happier news for food enthusiasts, Din Tai Fung is set to offer a new dessert, shaved snow topped with fresh mango, starting in July. Meanwhile, the chef of RYLA, Ray Hayashi, is marking a milestone anniversary with a Ramen Party on June 11, showcasing special ramen collaborations with chefs from Zoku and Mogu Mogu.

Despite the unrest in the community, the resilience and spirit of cooperation from residents reflect a hopeful narrative amidst the challenges faced. The involvement of local businesses and vendors in supporting both protesters and law enforcement demonstrates a commitment to community welfare that stands out in these difficult times.
