La Niña Watch Signals Possible Wet Season for Fiji in Oct–Dec 2025

A La Niña watch is currently in effect, with global climate models predicting a potential development of weak La Niña conditions between October and December 2025. This forecast is detailed in the Fiji Climate Outlook for October 2025 to March 2026, released by the Fiji Meteorological Service last week.

La Niña, characterized by cooler-than-normal sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, can significantly impact weather patterns, leading to altered wind patterns, ocean currents, and rainfall distributions across regions.

According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, normal to above-normal rainfall is expected across most parts of the Fiji Group this October. There is a likelihood of further above-normal rainfall extending from October into December 2025. As for temperatures, both maximum and minimum values are predicted to be above normal throughout this October to December period.

As Fiji heads toward borderline La Niña conditions, forecasters are cautioning about the possibility of increased rainfall, particularly during the approaching wet season. Historically, La Niña patterns tend to enhance rainfall across the region, indicating that residents and local communities should prepare for more significant precipitation and its associated effects.

Related forecasts indicate that this potential increase in rainfall could support replenishing water resources and benefiting agricultural activities. Previous reports from the Fiji Meteorological Service highlighted a dual narrative regarding weather patterns; while heavy rainfall poses challenges, it simultaneously offers opportunities for rejuvenation in agriculture. Communities are encouraged to actively stay informed and make preparations to adapt to the weather changes expected during this period.

As the Fiji islands brace for the effects of La Niña, the proactive approach taken by the Fiji Meteorological Service and the emphasis on preparedness can foster resilience among local communities, ensuring they can navigate the challenges posed by climatic variations effectively.
