KYOTO – Researchers at Kyoto University introduced an innovative robot monk on Tuesday, equipped with advanced artificial intelligence designed to assist monks during various religious ceremonies. This unique creation, named the Buddharoid, was demonstrated at the Shoren-in temple in Kyoto Prefecture, where it successfully interacted with reporters by responding to inquiries and performing traditional gestures, such as putting its palms together in prayer.
During the presentation, Professor Seiji Kumagai, a member of the research team and a practicing monk, asked the robot for its insights on personal relationships. The Buddharoid astutely advised, “It will improve if you reflect on your closeness with them and maintain an inner balance,” showcasing its ability to provide thoughtful responses grounded in Buddhist teachings.
The Buddharoid operates using the “BuddhaBot-Plus,” a specialized AI chatbot that leverages technology derived from OpenAI’s ChatGPT. It is programmed to address a diverse array of questions, ranging from personal dilemmas to broader social concerns, all interpreted through the lens of Buddhist scriptures. Additionally, its gentle movements—characterized by a slow, monk-like gait and gestures of respect—were inspired by a robot developed by a Chinese company.
Professor Kumagai emphasized the potential impact of the Buddharoid, suggesting it represents a “paradigm shift” that could assist monks in fulfilling their spiritual and community roles, particularly as the number of temples in Japan continues to decline. This development not only highlights the intersection of technology and spirituality but also offers a glimpse into how advancements in artificial intelligence can support traditional practices in the modern world.
