HBO’s upcoming DC series “Lanterns” has cast Emmy-winning actor Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, a prominent member of the Green Lantern Corps. This marks Chandler’s first series role since his performance in Showtime’s 2022 drama “Super Pumped.”
The series, which received a straight-to-series order in June after extensive development, is being spearheaded by Chris Mundy, known for “Ozark,” alongside Damon Lindelof, recognized for “Watchmen” and “Lost,” and Eisner Award-winning comics writer Tom King. The three are collaborating as co-writers and executive producers, with Mundy taking on the role of showrunner.
Currently in the process of casting and hiring directors, “Lanterns” is expected to begin shooting in Atlanta from January to June. The series is said to adopt a gritty, “True Detective”-style narrative, focusing on Jordan as he mentors a younger Lantern, John Stewart, who holds significance as one of DC’s first Black superheroes. Their storyline involves investigating a murder on Earth that has broader implications. DC and the producers are aiming to cast a younger actor to complement Chandler’s character.
Initially, DC considered enlisting a major film star for Hal Jordan, with discussions held with Josh Brolin, who ultimately declined the role. Speculation surrounding actors like Chris Pine and Ewan McGregor being potential candidates was largely unfounded.
Chandler gained fame for his Emmy-winning role as Coach Eric Taylor in the iconic “Friday Night Lights,” which aired on NBC from 2006 to 2011. He returned to series television in the Netflix thriller “Bloodline,” earning two Emmy nominations. His recent film credits include “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” “Godzilla vs. Kong,” and Damien Chazelle’s biopic “First Man.” He is represented by Gersh and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
