In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, Russia launched a comprehensive drone and missile attack on Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions early Sunday, claiming the lives of at least four people and injuring many others. This assault marks one of the most persistent attacks on Kyiv since the onset of the full-scale war. In the wake of this aggression, Poland temporarily restricted its airspace near two southeastern cities and dispatched air force jets as a precautionary measure.
Amid the overnight assault, Ukraine’s military reported that the Russian forces launched an extensive array of 595 drones and 48 missiles. Impressively, Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept 568 drones and 43 missiles, with much of the focus on Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that although the Ukrainian defenses performed valiantly, the 12-hour attack inflicted significant damage, destroying a cardiology clinic, factories, and residential buildings.
The Russian defense ministry confirmed the execution of what they termed a “massive” attack, employing long-range air and sea-based weaponry aimed ostensibly at Ukrainian military infrastructure. Despite Russia’s claims of not targeting civilians, thousands have perished, and civilian infrastructure has been severely damaged in prior strikes.
President Zelenskiy renewed his call to the international community for decisive action, urging the cutoff of Russia’s energy revenues that fuel its military activities. Although efforts to convince the U.S. to enforce sanctions have yielded limited results, Zelenskiy emphasized the importance of swift responses from global bodies such as the G7 and G20.
The attack on Kyiv was characterized by loud explosions and air defense maneuvers as defensive systems worked to repel the assault. Smoke billowed from strike sites, highlighting the continuous pressure on Ukraine’s air defenses. Zelenskiy mentioned the addition of another Patriot missile system from Israel to bolster defense capabilities, with further reinforcements expected later in the year.
