Several cakes featured phrases including “FREE,” “June 19 Free,” and “Free @ Last”—the latter phrase famously associated with Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech and its historical significance was seemingly diminished by the casual decoration style.
Kroger responded to the backlash by acknowledging that the products were “inconsistent” with the company’s intended guidance and stated that the cakes have been removed from the shelves.
