Kristin Chenoweth Reacts to Broadway Musical The Queen of Versailles Closing Early

Kristin Chenoweth has shared her heartfelt reaction to the news of her latest Broadway musical, The Queen of Versailles, set to conclude its run earlier than anticipated. The show, which premiered on November 9, 2023, at the St. James Theatre in New York City, will have its final performance on January 4, 2026, after just 65 regular performances and 32 previews.

In a candid Instagram video, Chenoweth expressed pride in the work the cast and crew produced, emphasizing the challenges that arise in bringing new art to life on stage. “I just want to say that I’m so proud of this new art that we’ve created, and it’s getting harder and harder to do so,” the Tony Award-winning actress stated. She encouraged her followers to attend live performances, underscoring the unique and irreplaceable experience of sharing a performance with an audience.

As reported, the production has seen impressive box office earnings, exceeding $1 million within a recent two-week period. However, factors like a lack of advance ticket sales are believed to have contributed to its early closing.

The Queen of Versailles, inspired by Lauren Greenfield’s 2012 documentary, features music and lyrics by Broadway veteran Stephen Schwartz and a book by Lindsey Ferrentino. It tells the story of Florida socialite Jackie Siegel’s ambitious quest to build the largest private home in the United States. The cast also includes Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham, Melody Butiu, Stephen DeRosa, Greg Hildreth, Tatum Grace Hopkins, Isabel Keating, and Nina White, with Sherie Rene Scott serving as a standby.

Chenoweth, reflecting on her collaboration with Schwartz, described him as both a “big brother” and an “inspiration.” Their long-standing partnership allows for a creative synergy that they both find refreshing.

As the show prepares for its conclusion, Chenoweth hopes audiences will take the opportunity to experience The Queen of Versailles or explore other Broadway productions, reminding them of the magic of live theater.
