The Kremlin has broken its silence as the deadline set by Washington approaches. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, addressed the positioning of American submarines and discussed the visit of U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow, hinting at the possibility of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
On August 4, the Kremlin expressed the need for “great caution” regarding nuclear threats following U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of the deployment of two submarines. Peskov indicated that these submarines were already on constant duty and stated that Russia did not wish to engage in unnecessary controversies.
Peskov emphasized that, like in many countries, political opinions in Russia vary widely, including radical viewpoints. He reaffirmed that only President Putin has the authority to determine Russia’s foreign policy and emphasized the call for restraint in nuclear rhetoric.
With regard to the upcoming visit from Witkoff, Peskov referred to the meeting as “important and useful.” He noted that the dialogue between the two nations continues, and the United States is making efforts to mediate and find a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Peskov expressed hope for continued diplomatic solutions, underscoring that the preferred method for resolving the Ukrainian issue is through political and diplomatic means.
Furthermore, he opened the door to the possibility of a future meeting between Putin and Zelensky, dependent on the completion of necessary preparatory work, which he mentioned is still ongoing.
This development highlights a critical moment in U.S.-Russia relations and the ongoing situation in Ukraine, with diplomatic efforts being prioritized amid heightened military tensions. The focus remains on dialogue as both nations navigate their complex relationship.
