As rain continues to affect regions, the Korea Meteorological Administration predicts a further downpour from the night of the 16th until the early hours of the 18th. The focus of this rain will primarily be on the eastern coastal areas and Jeju Island. Overnight, a rare “October concentrated rain” occurred in parts of the country as a low-pressure system moved through the area sandwiched between two high-pressure systems, leading to strong southwesterly winds that brought significant moisture.
Notably, in Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do, locations such as Nakwoldo and Anmado experienced over 47mm of rain in just one hour early in the morning. Similarly, Haenam-gun recorded an intense rainfall rate of 46.5mm per hour. Jeju Island’s Gujwa-eup and Seongsan-eup also reported substantial rainfall, with 44.5mm and 42.5mm falling respectively within one hour the night before.
Some areas in Honam have reported the strongest October rainfall on record. In Gochang, Jeollabuk-do, a one-hour rainfall rate of 34.5mm was recorded, marking the highest since the beginning of rainfall observations in that area in December 2010. Records were also broken in Yeonggwang, Jeonju, and Jeongeup, with maximum one-hour rainfall measurements of 31.4mm, 31.0mm, and 28.8mm, respectively.
As of 8 AM, rain continues predominantly in the eastern coastal regions and western parts of Jeju. Most areas, excluding Seoul, Incheon, northern Gyeonggi, and northwestern Gangwon, are expected to experience a cessation of rain by midday. However, the Yeongnam area and Jeju may have rain lingering into the afternoon, while rain in the eastern coastal regions of Gangwon is expected to continue into the 17th.
Forecasts predict additional rainfall totals for the 16th, estimating between 10 to 50mm in regions such as Jeju, Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam; 10 to 40mm in Daegu and Gyeongbuk; and lower amounts in other areas.
On the 17th, rain is expected to persist in Gangwon until the morning, while Jeju will see renewed precipitation due to a low-pressure system developing over the western seas. The rain that begins on the night of the 17th will spread nationally overnight and end in the morning hours of the 18th, although some eastern coastal regions may continue to experience rainfall longer.
Current temperatures across major cities show Seoul at 17.1°C, Incheon at 16.8°C, and other regions ranging from 17.7°C in Daejeon to 20.6°C in Busan. The maximum daytime temperature is forecasted to range from 19 to 27°C.
However, temperatures are projected to drop significantly on the 19th as cold air from the north moves in, with inland areas anticipating morning temperatures around 5°C. Cold air, being denser, can lead to increased surface winds, resulting in a noticeable drop in perceived temperature.
Additionally, an influx of waves is expected on the eastern coast, which may lead to strong surf along the beaches. Wind speeds in the southern seas, Jeju, and southern East Sea are projected to reach 30 to 45 km/h with wave heights of 1.0 to 2.5 meters, stressing the need for caution along coastal areas.
