Kolisi Targets Breakdown Battle as Springboks Unveil New Look for Italy Test

Kolisi Targets the Breakdown as Springboks Prep for Italy Showdown in Turin

South Africa’s rugby captain, Siya Kolisi, has highlighted the Springboks’ commitment to mastering the breakdown as they gear up for their match against Italy in Turin tonight. This encounter is particularly significant following Italy’s impressive display during their July tour of South Africa, where they managed to challenge the Springboks significantly, even though South Africa claimed victory in the first Test with a score of 42–24.

Kolisi pointed out that Italy’s recent 26–19 win over Australia underscores their current strengths, particularly in the breakdown battle. He emphasized that the Springboks have dedicated substantial preparation time to countering Italy’s strengths in this area, noting that effective ball management will play a critical role in their success during the match.

In anticipation of this important clash, the Springboks have made 11 changes to their previous lineup, which recently triumphed over France 32–17. This strategy not only provides an opportunity for fresh talent but also serves to strengthen the squad ahead of a crucial match against Ireland on November 22. Among the new additions is 22-year-old Ethan Hooker, who will make a notable shift from wing to inside center, teaming up with 23-year-old Canan Moodie in the midfield. Kolisi expressed confidence in Hooker, praising his passion for the sport and readiness to face the challenges that lie ahead.

The match is scheduled to start at 9 PM local time in Turin and is part of the prestigious Autumn International series. As the Springboks look to sustain their momentum and enhance their squad depth for future competitions, Kolisi’s guidance and tactical acumen will be essential against the Azzurri. This matchup not only represents an opportunity for emerging players to showcase their skills but also acts as a crucial step toward their overarching goals and aspirations in international rugby.
