Kolek’s Summer Struggles: Will Knicks Turn to Veteran Guards?

Tyler Kolek, the second-year guard for the New York Knicks, has yet to impress during the team’s summer league games, with his shooting struggles overshadowing his potential. Over the first two games, Kolek has faced difficulties, posting a mere 1-of-13 shooting performance in the latest loss and accumulating nine turnovers. The Knicks had high hopes for Kolek, expecting him to make a significant leap from a rookie season where he logged just 296 minutes, including under 10 during the playoff run.

Known for his skills as a floor general and his highlight-reel passing, Kolek’s abilities were anticipated to mesh well with the fast-paced offense favored by new head coach Mike Brown. However, his lack of production may prompt the Knicks’ front office to reconsider their roster depth and potentially bring back veteran guard Landry Shamet.

Shamet, who missed much of the previous season due to injury, showed promise during the latter stages of the playoffs, eventually earning a spot in the rotation during the Eastern Conference Finals. The Knicks already have four guards likely secure in the rotation—Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, Deuce McBride, and newly acquired Jordan Clarkson—leading to the idea that Kolek’s struggles could open the door for Shamet to reclaim a role as the fifth guard.

In addition to Shamet, other veteran options such as Cam Payne or Delon Wright exist, both likely available for minimum contracts. The Knicks might also consider pursuing elite players like Chris Paul or Malcolm Brogdon if they become available. Furthermore, they are reportedly keeping an eye on Marcus Smart, who has an expiring contract with the Washington Wizards, should he make it to the open market.

While Kolek’s early summer league performances have raised concerns, there remains hope that he can find his rhythm as the season approaches. In the meantime, the Knicks have the opportunity to enhance their roster depth with experienced guards who can contribute immediately. This flexibility might be a pivotal factor as the team strives for success in the upcoming season.
