Knockout Thrills Await in Women’s Africa Cup of Nations!

The 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is moving into its knockout stages, with crucial matches scheduled on Friday and Saturday. In the quarter-finals, nine-time champions Nigeria will be up against Zambia in Casablanca, while host nation Morocco will face Mali in Rabat. On Saturday, Algeria will compete against Ghana in Berkane, and reigning champions South Africa will take on Senegal in Oujda.

South Africa’s defender, Lebohang Ramalepe, who was awarded player of the match in her team’s dominant 4-0 victory against Mali, expressed the need for composure in the knockout rounds. She emphasized the importance of maintaining their game plan against Senegal to secure a place in the semi-finals.

Nigeria’s interim coach Justine Madugu acknowledged his team’s struggle with scoring after a goalless draw against Algeria but praised their ability to reach the last eight. Madugu, who took over the coaching role following the departure of Randy Waldrum, is focused on leading the Super Falcons to a record-breaking 10th title in this tournament.

The tournament was initially scheduled for July 2024 but has been postponed to avoid conflict with the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. This delay has allowed for enhancements to the venues that will also host the men’s Cup of Nations in 2026. Morocco’s men’s team aims to improve on their previous performance, while the women’s team, having made history by reaching the World Cup for the first time and advancing past the group stages, seeks to capitalize on the momentum.

Morocco’s captain Ghizlane Chebbak, a standout during the group stages with four goals, aims to secure the Golden Boot. Coach Jorge Vilda, who led Spain to victory at the recent Women’s World Cup, is driven by a desire for success, expressing that the pressure they feel is a privilege, indicative of the team’s potential for greatness.

This tournament not only showcases the talent of African women’s football but also keeps the excitement alive as teams battle for continental pride and a chance to make history on the international stage.
