The New York Knicks’ search for a new head coach is gaining momentum as they recently conducted an interview with Micah Nori, an assistant coach with the Minnesota Timberwolves. This development was highlighted by ESPN’s Shams Charania, who noted that Nori is the latest candidate being considered for the role.
Having joined the NBA coaching ranks in the 2009-10 season, Nori has accumulated significant experience. He began his coaching career with the Toronto Raptors and has had brief stints with teams like the San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, and Detroit Pistons. For the past four seasons, he has served as the Timberwolves’ lead assistant.
Although Nori lacks head coaching experience, he did step in briefly to coach during a crucial moment in the 2024 Western Conference playoffs after head coach Chris Finch suffered an injury. Despite being in charge for just a minute and a half, he guided the team to victory against the Memphis Grizzlies.
Nori is the third candidate the Knicks have interviewed following the surprising dismissal of Tom Thibodeau, who had led the team to the Eastern Conference finals. The Knicks have also spoken with Mike Brown, known for his solid coaching record, and Taylor Jenkins, who recently parted ways with the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Knicks initially attempted to secure interviews with several coaches currently employed by other teams but were denied permission. This includes interest in notable figures like Jason Kidd and Ime Udoka.
The array of candidates reflects the franchise’s commitment to finding a coach who can lead them effectively moving forward, especially after a promising season under Thibodeau’s guidance. With new opportunities on the horizon, the Knicks are positioning themselves to make an impactful coaching decision that could shape the future of the organization.
