Klay Thompson made a strong impression in his debut with the Dallas Mavericks, scoring 22 points and setting a franchise record by hitting six 3-pointers during a 120-109 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. The game marked Thompson’s first time playing alongside teammates Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
Reflecting on his debut, Thompson shared, “The feelings were a lot of nerves, anxiousness, for a few minutes, then you see one go through and you feel great. Great debut. It’s only one game in October, but it feels good to get the first one out of the way.” This performance stood in stark contrast to his final game with the Golden State Warriors, where he missed all ten of his shots in April.
Thompson missed his first four attempts before sinking his first 3-pointer, igniting a strong second half for Dallas, as he accumulated 14 points after the break and went four for five from beyond the arc. The Mavericks improved their shooting from 3-point range significantly in the second half, converting 13 of 21 attempts.
Another highlight of Thompson’s night included a conversation with former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, which preceded a pivotal 3-point shot during a 16-3 Mavericks run that established a commanding 20-point lead.
Thompson ended the night shooting 7 of 13 overall and contributed seven rebounds and three steals. Doncic led the Mavericks with 28 points, ten rebounds, and eight assists. Thompson’s lone assist demonstrated teamwork as he initially looked to shoot but instead passed to Irving for a successful 3-pointer.
Doncic praised Thompson’s impact on the game, stating, “It makes your life easier. It makes my life and Kai’s easier, it makes the whole team’s life easier. It’s a lot of space. It’s great.”
